Governor Approves New Protections for Canyons
KPBS reported this week Gov. Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 1169 into law, adding protections to San Diego’s canyons and other open space. The law allows San Diego to dedicate 10,666 more acres of land. Dedicated land requires a two-thirds vote by city residents before the land can be developed; changing undedicated space only requires a majority vote of the City Council.

“Our open space will continue to be whittled away for various other uses if we don’t dedicate it… if we don’t give it that layer of protection,” San Diego Canyonlands Executive Director Eric Bowlby told KPBS.
