In the latest edition of San Diego Explained, NBC 7 San Diego’s Catherine Garcia and I tackle the tentative agreement between the San Diego Unified School District and the San Diego Education Association, the union that represents local teachers.
The deal, which was ratified overwhelmingly by teachers Wednesday, saves the jobs of more than 1,000 teachers. But it also contains a pretty serious caveat: Students could see their school year cut by as many as 14 additional days if voters fail to pass either of the two tax increases that will be placed on November’s general election ballot.
To help explain the deal, we visited Central Elementary School in City Heights, where we enlisted the help of two students to show what the deal’s all about, and how it has brought the school district and the teachers union closer together.
