San Diego Explained: How to Navigate Open Enrollment

Charter schools, your neighborhood school, others in the district – you’ve got a lot of options for where to send your child within the San Diego Unified School District.

The district participates in the state’s “open enrollment” program, often called “school choice.” It gives you the freedom to pick a different school for your child to attend, aside from your nearest neighborhood school.

If you’re unimpressed with your neighborhood school, navigating the open-enrollment process to find the right fit doesn’t have to be overwhelming. First, check your calendar. The open-enrollment period runs between Nov. 1 to Feb. 15, so you can submit your application at any point within that window. Pick your top three schools, complete your application and wait for a call. If there’s room at your top choice, your child can go there or stick with the neighborhood school.

And how do you pick a “good school”? NBC 7’s Catherine Garciaand I cover that and get a little more in depth on the school choice process in this week’s San Diego Explained.
