Students of Bayside Community Center‘s ballet folklorico youth group performed Thursday during a health fair at the La Maestra Community Health Centers medical clinic in City Heights.

La Maestra organized the health fair as part of National Health Center Week, a nationwide effort by health centers to promote their services and advocate for transforming health care in the community.

Local celebrations started Aug. 12 with an opportunity to have breakfast with health care providers and continued through the week with parent workshops, free health screenings, car seat safety checkups, and a morning fitness class.

The ballet folklorico dances demonstrated creative approaches to exercise while including La Maestra’s commitment to provide appropriate services to a diverse community.

“City Heights is the United Nations of San Diego County,” said R. Daniel Hernandez, a spokesman for La Maestra. “We have over 26 languages that are spoken, [including] sub dialects from various parts of the world. We’re proficient in providing services to the multilingual community. We want them to know that they can come to us and we will take care of them.”
