“Fairmount Corridor Arts Concept,” a study published last year by the City Heights Community Development Corporation, outlines potential art placement along Fairmount Avenue between El Cajon Boulevard and University Avenue to make the high-traffic area friendly to pedestrians.
Last month, the plan became more of a reality when esidents celebrated the unveiling of Cultural Fusion outside La Maestra Community Health Center on Fairmount Avenue.
The sculpture by Jim Bliesner, a UC San Diego Urban Studies and Planning lecturer and a 40 year resident of City Heights, incorporates iconic multicultural symbols and patterns that reflect the diverse cultures of the residents of City Heights.
Bliesner has participated in numerous studies in the neighborhood aimed at enhancing commercial corridors and walkability.
“This is sort of like the beginning of that effort, to see if it works,” Bliesner said. “That’s the long term art piece, to see if the concepts of economic development evolve.”
