Connecting with Roots on World Music Day

World Music Day

Artists from within San Diego’s refugee communities were celebrating World Music Day and Make Music Day on June 21, 2018 at City Heights Library.

Monica Emery is Executive Director of Center for World Music, a San Diego based nonprofit that preserves traditional performances through concerts and education.

“World Music Day is a celebration of musicians and amateur musicians all over the world. It’s also know as Make Music Day in United States,” Emery said.

Performer Ari Honarvar comes from Iran. She says that being removed from one’s traditional culture can cause feelings of isolation and that having something that connects refugees back to their home can help them rebuild their lives.

“Poetry is as much a part of a person as their very heart beat,” Honarvar said.

Upcoming performances and workshop from Center for World Music can be found at centerforworldmusic.org.
